4. Clinical Policies and Procedures

  • Clinical Supervision:  Under no circumstance may a student provide anesthesia care unsupervised.
  • Student Performance Levels:  Novice, advanced beginner, competent, and proficient
  • Documentation Training:
    • Electronic Health Record (EHR) system
    • HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality
  • Emergency Protocols:
    • Facility procedures for fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other critical situations.
  • Medication and Equipment Policies:
    • Overview of medication safety, controlled substances, drug tray handling, and pharmacy protocols
    •  Equipment handling and sterilization protocols
  • Exposure Protocols (needle stick, body fluids, infectious material)

5. Orientation to Clinical Areas

  • Daily Student Clinical Responsibilities

    • Clinical assignments and contacting clinical preceptor ahead of clinical day
    • Pre- and post-operative assessments, order sets, labs, medications, and testing
    • Room set-up and restocking
    • Clinical records
      • Care plans
      • Documentation of student cases and clinical hours

  • Time Commitment:
    •  Time spent in class and clinical practicums (including in-house call) should not routinely exceed 64 hours/week. 
    • 10-hour rest period between clinical shifts is required.
    • No student may provide direct patient care for a period longer than 16 continuous hours.
  • Clinical Hours:  Clinical coordinators reserve the right to offer clinical experiences and schedule student clinical time during day and evening hours, and on weekends.
    • Reporting time and signing out
    • Procedures for calling in sick or late on a clinical day
    • Student emergencies

6. Learning Resources and Support

  • Facility Library Access: Instructions for accessing journals, databases, and other educational materials
  • Mentorship and Feedback: Opportunities for formal and informal feedback sessions

7. Communication and Feedback Channels
