The Advanced Topics in Pain and its Management Elective is designed to increase awareness of the diversity of pain conditions and their impact on individuals, their families, and the community. It incorporates narrative medicine and first-hand accounts to enhance the appreciation of the diversity and complexity of chronic pain and its impact on people’s lives. Through the insightfulness of the narrator, a more holistic understanding of approaches that help or hinder the management of the condition emerges. The importance of multidisciplinary and interprofessional approaches to care is highlighted. Updated clinical and basic science findings will be integrated into the course to reinforce current practice guidelines and best practices. The format of the course includes self-reflections submitted by the student learners and interaction between the students and faculty as we discuss and debate the individual cases.
