The Military Medicine Program spans 3.5 years of the military student members’ educational experience at RVU, beginning in the second semester of the 1st year. The Program is a special option that offers additional education opportunities not provided in the core curriculum. This includes the three semesters of structured academics (Mil Med 5041, 5042, 5043) during the first two years, the Intensive Surgical and Trauma Skills course (Mil Med 4010) at the end of the second year, and ongoing mentoring, residency match preparation and research opportunities during the clinical years. This Program collaborates with other COM Special Tracks where synergies are evident and possible.
Students eligible to be Program members include those attending RVU on a Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) award, those on military active duty, or those currently members of a National Guard or Reserve unit.
The academic demands on any osteopathic medical student are high. Sufficient study time is limited for successful completion of the curriculum. As a result, Military Medicine Program members may not participate in other Special Tracks.
Program Goals:
To provide a means for students to network with fellow military students at RVU.
To introduce students to military leaders in our community including military physicians and other clinicians.
To introduce and foster concepts critical for success for students’ upcoming life in the military.
To introduce basic clinical training to Program members relevant to military medical practice.
To introduce and offer opportunities for participation in research projects relevant to military medical practice.
To prepare students to compete for the highest quality residency programs either within the military or civilian programs.
To prepare students to provide the highest quality medical care to the nation’s military service personnel.
The goals and objectives of this Program will be met through collaboration with military officers and expert guests from military bases, medical centers, community hospitals and other clinical and training sites.
