Promotion is defined as progression from one academic year to the next. A student must satisfactorily complete all course requirements in the preceding academic year in order to progress to the next academic year and to be considered as making satisfactory academic progress.
General Program Advising (Academic)
The Directors of Preclinical Education provide student support upon matriculation, general guidance throughout Years 1 and 2, and referral to additional support services when needed. Students are encouraged to initially seek guidance from their course syllabus, professor, or course director should course-specific questions arise. Access to Director of Preclinical Education contact information can be found via the Student Portal.
Clinical Education provides students with support through the Clinical Competency Team (CCT). The CCT functions as an academic and clinical career advisory team of the COM to assist students in achieving required clinical milestones for graduation and future success. The CCT advises and aids students in developing an individualized success plan. This plan may include developing time management strategies, study skills, test-taking tips, assessment of specialty options, including relative competitiveness and review of match outcome data, or anything else that may assist students as they progress through their clinical curriculum. The CCT teaches and reinforces decision-making strategies to help students align their qualifications and desires with their preferred specialty, residency program, and career path.
OMS I to OMS II
Students who have completed the following requirements will be eligible to be promoted to the second year (OMS II) of the program:
- Successful completion of all required OMS I coursework; and
- Good financial standing with the Office of Student Financial Services; and
- Documentation of current health insurance on file with the Office of Student Financial Services.
OMS II to OMS III
To be promoted to OMS III, a student must:
- Satisfactorily complete all required OMS I and OMS II coursework, including any required remediation;
- Be in good academic standing at the time the promotion decision is made;
- Meet all institutional requirements for entry into clinical rotations, as outlined in the Clinical Education Manual, including required documentation, trainings, background checks, immunizations, and other onboarding requirements; and
- Receive approval for promotion through the University’s established academic review and promotions process.
Students who have not met one or more of these requirements may have their promotion delayed and may be required to complete additional academic work, remediation, or other institutional requirements before entering OMS III.
Successful promotion to OMS III, by itself, does not constitute eligibility to sit for national board examinations. Board examination eligibility and authorization are governed by separate institutional policies. Additional requirements related to examination timing, clinical readiness, or academic progression may be established by institutional policy and applied consistently.
OMS III to OMS IV
To be promoted to OMS IV, a student must:
- Satisfactorily complete all required OMS III coursework, including any required remediation;
- Successfully complete all OMS III clinical clerkships by the first day of the OMS IV academic year. Any exceptions must receive explicit approval from the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine;
- Be in good academic standing at the time the promotion decision is made;
- Meet all institutional requirements for entry into clinical rotations, as outlined in the Clinical Education Manual including required documentation, health insurance, trainings, background checks, immunizations, and other onboarding requirements; and
- Receive approval for promotion through the University’s established academic review and promotions process.
Students who do not meet these requirements may not be permitted to participate in audition clerkships and will not be promoted to OMS IV until all requirements are completed.
