SRG 4010: Advanced Surgical Skills

Program
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM)
Credits 2

This course will provide OMS IV students with advanced exposure to clinical surgical skills used to prepare students for the surgical clerkship. It will also provide students with the opportunity to advance their teaching skills as they work with Faculty members in setting up the surgery intensive module in SRG 3001 and facilitating certain skills (knot tying and suturing). Students will deliver at least one academic presentation, will help critique 3rd year student case presentations, debrief a simulation, and lead a discussion on OR etiquette and sterile technique. Any student may take the course; no need to be interested in surgery as a career. The faculty will deliver suggestions as to best practices for clinical teaching, presenting information, and giving feedback. The overall goal for the course is to facilitate skill acquisition in teaching other students and to help prepare OMS IV for their PGY1 year.
